Project Origin

Chiang Mai, as the economic hub of northern Thailand and a significant tourist destination, has long faced challenges concerning its public transportation system. The existing bus services fall short of meeting community demands, with routes that do not adequately cover high-traffic areas. Additionally, the irregular frequency of bus schedules and uncertainty in travel times have led citizens to continue relying on personal vehicles such as cars and motorcycles.

In response to these issues, Chiang Mai University, through its Climate Change and Infrastructure Research Unit, has partnered with the Lanna Transport Cooperative, the Chiang Mai Municipality, the Chiang Mai Provincial Transport Office, and local citizens. Together, they aim to tackle the transportation challenges by investigating and proposing efficient management methods for the public bus system within the city. The initiative emphasizes creating routes based on actual travel demand, establishing consistent service schedules, and fostering collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure fair and effective management for everyone involved.

Project Objectives

1. To study and analyze the efficiency of public transportation in Chiang Mai.
2. To demonstrate a management system for public buses in Chiang Mai and evaluate its effectiveness during the demonstration phase.
3. To recommend improvements for enhancing the efficiency of public transportation services in Chiang Mai and to foster cooperation among government entities, private sectors, and citizens towards a feasible establishment of a dedicated administrative fund.

This initiative seeks to create a well-managed network that encompasses both administrative bodies and public transport routes effectively.
